Garterband Pattern

Here's the Garterband pattern offered on my Ravelry downloads. It's a learning pattern for beginning knitters and is great because you can use scraps. You'll learn i-cord, increasing and decreasing and do garter stitch - plus it's a great accessory! The instructions might be overkill but I use this pattern when teaching 4th and 5th graders so I tried to make it as clear as possible.

Materials needed: 1 skein light worted weight yarn. You won't need the whole skein. This is a great pattern for scraps. I used silver ribbon yarn.
Needles: 2 double pointed needles size 3 or size to get a tight gauge, 8 sts/inch in garter stitch.
Yarn needle to sew in ends.

The headband is knit from one i-cord end to the other.

Sl1 - slip 1 stitch from left needle to right as if you're knitting it but don't knit it.
M1 - make 1 stitch extra by knitting into the next stitch 2 times, once through the front andonce through the back.
K - knit.
YO - yarn over. Wrap the yarn around the right hand needle one time before working the next stitch. this creates a new stitch and a small hole.
SSK - slip one stitch from the left needle to the right needle knitwise. Slip a second stitch the same way. Put the left needle into both those stitches and knit the two together.
SSSK - same as SSK but slip 3 stitches and knit them together instead of just 2.
K2tog - knit 2 stitches together by putting your right needle into 2 stitches on the left needle. Knit these two stitches togehter as if it was one stitch.
St/Sts - stitch/stitches.

Cast on 3 stitches.
Knit 10 inches i-cord. (Knit 3 stitches. Without turning work, slide the stitches to the other end of the needle. Your working yarn will be at the wrong end of the needle. Pull the working yarn across the back of the 3 stitches and knit them again. Repeat.)

Increase for width of headband as follows:
Row 1: sl 1, m1, k to last st, m1, k1
Row 2: sl 1, k to end of row
Row 3: sl 1, yo, k to last st, yo, k1
Row 4: sl 1, k to end of row
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are 15 sts.
Sl 1, k to end of row.
Repeat this row until the piece is 14 long when stretched excluding the i-cord or until it fits around your head not counting the i-cord. Garter stitch really stretches so don't hesitate to pull on it a bit.

Decrease for second tie
Row 1: Sl 1, yo, ssk, ssk, k to last 5 sts, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1
Row 2: Sl 1, k to end of row
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 9 sts ending with a row 2
Sl 1, yo, ssk, sssk, s2tog, yo, k1 (7 sts)
Sl 1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1 (5 sts)
Sl 1, k to end of row
Sl 1, sssk, k1 (3 sts)

Second tie: k 10 inches of i-cord. Cut the yarn leaving a tail and sew it trhough the 3 sts to bind them off. Then thread the tails of the yarn through to i-cord to hide them.
